Carbon Monoxide Exposure Investigation

At the request of the client, Atlas performed an investigation for an accident involving a worker exposure to carbon monoxide and other exhaust gases. The incident involved equipment with internal combustion engines. The purpose of this investigation was to reconstruct the potential carbon monoxide exposure that may have occurred around the estimated time of the incident.

Atlas understood that a worker was repairing equipment using internal combustion engine powered equipment. The weather was apparently very windy and the workers moved several pieces of equipment into a building to avoid the wind.

Atlas performed an investigation of the exposure incident to better understand the event and assist in the determination of potential root causes. Atlas also re-created the exposure event using the same equipment present during the real event. During the exposure re-creation, Atlas collected real-time data to determine the emissions from all equipment involved and in areas of the building to understand the employee’s potential carbon monoxide and exhaust gases exposure.

Atlas then used the data gathered during the investigation and air sampling to construct an exposure model to estimate the carbon monoxide exposure of workers over the course of the work shift. The data from the model and exposure investigation was compiled into a written report that outlined the results of the assessment along with various potential exposure scenarios. The client used the information to understand the event and institute measures to prevent similar events in the future.
